Why go Full Native?
Full native Angus are unique - they have no imported blood lines. The original native Aberdeen Angus was developed as a moderate, functional grass-based animal, bred for fertility, ease of calving and the ability to finish efficiently off forage. Over time, many modern Angus bloodlines introduced imported genetics and selection for larger framed cattle, moving away from the traditional native type at the expense of the original key traits of calving ease, grass efficiency and fertility.
Who are we?
Working Cattle Company, based out of New House Farm in Monmouthshire, South Wales, focuses on preserving these original native Angus traits through carefully selected full native bloodlines.
Having previously worked on native Angus breeding farms focused on traditional native genetics, I have seen first-hand the value of functional, easy-calving cattle bred for commercial systems. Alongside now breeding our own herd of full native Aberdeen Angus in Wales, I have spent time working on dairy farms, giving an understanding of the pressures around calving, fertility and milk production.
That experience is exactly why Working Cattle Company was created - to support dairy farmers with genuine native Angus genetics selected for easy calving, shorter gestation and practical grass-based performance. We strongly believe there is huge value in returning to true native Angus types.
Our stud bull, Master Benjamin, is particularly unique. His dam was AI’d using semen from an original native Angus sire from the 1960s - preserving genetics that remain true to the traditional Aberdeen Angus of the past. The result is a bull with naturally shorter gestation genetics, exceptional fleshing ability and the type of practical, functional traits increasingly valued in modern dairy and grass - based systems.
For dairy farms, these genetics offer a straightforward, low risk option by helping reduce the likelihood of assistance at calving, supporting quicker recovery and getting cows into milk production problem free and back in calf efficiently. Importantly, easy calving does not come at the expense of calf quality. Small birth weights does not mean small finishing carcass.
As interest grows in forage based and low input beef systems, there is increasing demand for native Angus calves with genuine grass based genetics.
We can help to help connect customers using Master Benjamin genetics with farmers and finishers specifically looking for these types of calves.
All semen is collected and processed to the highest standards through one of only six APHA-approved collection centres in the UK. Before entering collection, Master Benjamin underwent extensive health testing over several months to meet the strict export and biosecurity requirements demanded of approved stud bulls. This ensures customers can have confidence not only in the quality of the genetics, but also in the health status, handling and professional processing of every straw supplied.
